Champions League: Napoli 3-1 Chelsea

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

Chelsea suffered a 3-1 defeat at Napoli in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash to leave the Blues in real danger of crashing out of the competition.

The visitors took the lead against the run of play in the 27th minute when Napoli captain Paolo Cannavaro mis-kicked a clearance and succeeded only in playing in Juan Mata, who fired home past Morgan De Sanctis.

Napoli got back on level terms just over five minutes before the break as Ezequiel Lavezzi escaped from Raul Meireles all too easily and curled home in superb style from the edge of the area.

And the Stadio San Paolo erupted when more weak play from Branislav Ivanović allowed Edinson Cavani to convert Gökhan İnler's cross with his shoulder at the far post in added time at the end of the first half.

Lavezzi made the game safe in the 65th minute when he dispatched the ball into an unguarded net after being fed by Cavani.
