The hosts spurned a golden opportunity to break the deadlock on 19 minutes when the referee awarded a penalty when Luis Suárez was felled in the box by Wojciech Szczęsny.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, their travails from the spot have been indicative of their season in general and Dirk Kuyt's effort was saved by Szczęsny, who also denied the Dutchman's shot from the rebound.

The Arsenal goalkeeper was powerless to prevent the opening goal four minutes later, however, when Laurent Koscielny, under little pressure, turned Jordan Henderson's cross into his own net.

Arsenal equalised shortly after the half-hour mark as Bacary Sagna's right-wing cross perfectly picked out van Persie who had got in front of Jamie Carragher and the striker made no mistake with his header.

And just as the game appeared to be petering out into a draw, van Persie snatched victory for the Gunners by expertly volleying home Alex Song's brilliant chipped pass from a narrow angle.
