Gabriel Agbonlahor had given Villa a first-half lead before Jay Rodriguez levelled three minutes after the break with a superb header.

Libor Kozák headed the visitors back in front after 64 minutes, only for substitute Dani Osvaldo to head a second equaliser five minutes later.

But Villa would not be denied as Delph scored a fabulous winner with ten minutes remaining.

Having been under pressure, Paul Lambert's men broke quickly and Agbonlahor picked out Delph with a well-measured pass just inside the Southampton half.

The 24-year-old collected the ball and ran towards goal before rocketing an outstanding 25-yard effort that arrowed into the top corner.

"It's been a while since I've scored a goal like that," Delph told Sky Sports. "Last time I scored a goal like that was at Leeds, so it's nice to get off the mark.

"I've been getting a bit of stick from the lads (for not scoring), but I've been given the licence to get forward and to get a few shots off. I did that today and luckily one went in."

Lambert added: "I thought Fabian's overall game was fabulous. He has been terrific for me this season, but the strike was just worthy of winning any game."
