Joey Barton capped his first start since his jail sentence by making and scoring from the spot as Newcastle beat West Brom 2-1 to hand interim boss Joe Kinnear his first win since arriving at St James' Park.

Barton had not started a match since before his 74-day jail sentence in May for assault on a 16-year-old boy, and also a training ground assault on former Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo, which earned him a suspended sentence.

The bad-boy midfielder put Newcastle ahead in the ninth minute after Shola Ameobi was brought down in the box by Ryan Donk following a cunning pass from Barton.

Barton converted the resulting penalty, sending Scott Carson the wrong way.

Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins marked his 24th birthday with his side's second on 42 minutes, heading home a Habib Beye cross past Carson.

West Brom substitute Ishmael Miller pulled a goal back in the 65th minute but the home side held on for a first league win since 66 days ago.

The win moved the Magpies out of the relegation zone and into 15th place, a point behind the Baggies.
