Chelsea scraped through to the second round after beating CFR Cluj 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Luiz Felipe Scolari's men dominated first-half possession but needed a defensive mistake to take the lead on 40 minutes as the Cluj defense left Salomon Kalou totally unmarked at a Deco free kick and the Ivory Coast striker slotted home at the second attempt after stumbling over his first effort.

The Romanians shocked Chelsea 10 minutes into the second half when Yssouf Koné headed home an equaliser from a flowing move.

But Didier Drogba stepped off the bench to hit the winner in the 71st minute as he brought Joe Cole's pass under control before poking his shot past the Cluj keeper.

The goal made him Chelsea's all-time leading European scorer, ahead of Frank Lampard.

AS Roma finally finished as Group A winner ahead of Chelsea thanks to a 2-0 victory over Bordeaux at Stadio Olimpico.

Bordeaux needed to win at Roma to have any chance of finishing in the top two places and held out until Matteo Brighi scored the opener on 61 minutes.

Roma captain Francesco Totti made sure his side took top spot with a second goal in the 79th minute with a neat right-foot finish from outside the box.

Claudio Pizarro and Markus Rosenberg scored the second-half goals to put Werder Bremen into the UEFA Cup after a 2-1 win over Inter Milan.

Bremen went ahead after 63 minutes when Pizarro poked home from close range after Mesut Ozil's shot had parried by Júlio César.

Ozil was involved in Bremen's second goal in the 81st minute as he cut the ball back for Rosenberg to smash the ball home.

Inter scored a late consolation through Zlatan Ibrahimović, curling home an excellent shot from 25 yards with two minutes remaining.

Panathinaikos surprisingly won Group B after a 1-0 win over Anorthosis Famagusta to complete the second-round lineup.

The hosts were gifted the only goal when substitute Anorthosis goalkeeper Zoltán Nagy made a crucial mistake in the 69th minute.

Giorgos Karagounis drove a low shot from the edge of the area and Nagy seemed to have the chance covered but somehow the ball spilled out of his grasp, over his body and into the goal.

Panathinaikos finished with 10 points, two more than former Group B leaders Inter Milan.

A much-changed Barcelona won Group C despite losing 3-2 to Shakhtar Donetsk at Camp Nou.

Shakhtar took the lead just past the half-hour mark as the visitors worked the ball down the left before a cut-back allowed Oleksandr Gladkyy to finish confidently.

Gladkyy notched his second of the night on 58 minutes as he rose well to head home from close range following a Jádson free-kick.

Barça pulled one back two minutes later when Sylvinho played a quick one-two with Seydou Keita before the full-back hit a crisp left-foot shot inside the post.

Shakhtar hit the hosts on the break in the 76th minute when Răzvan Raţ rolled the ball across the face of goal for Fernandinho to slide home at the far post.

Barcelona responded with a delightful goal as substitute Eidur Gudjohnsen's dinked pass was beautifully weighted for Sergio Busquets to score with seven minutes remaining.

Already-qualified Sporting Lisbon beat bottom-of-the-group Basel 1-0 at St. Jakob Park Stadium.

Sporting grabbed the only goal after 19 minutes when Yannick Djaló nipped between two defenders to slide in a Marat Izmailov cross.

Ryan Babel 45

Albert Riera 68

David N'Gog 77

Liverpool snatched top spot in Group D as they came from behind to win 3-1 at PSV Eindhoven.

Danko Lazović put PSV in front on 36 minutes after a mess of clearing a corner by Javier Mascherano, but former Ajax starlet Ryan Babel nodded home the equaliser with the last act of the first half.

The Reds took the lead in the 68th minute when Albert Riera unleashed a 30-yards stunner which rocketed into the top corner.

And David N'Gog extended the lead nine minutes later as he scored his first goal for the club after being fed by Robbie Keane.
