Julio Baptista hit a double to give AS Roma a 2-0 victory over Sampdoria and climbed into eighth place in Serie A.

The match was originally scheduled to be played back in October 2008, but was postponed because of bad weather in the Italian capital.

The home side found themselves with a totally revamped squad, as Francesco Totti, Stefano Okaka, Max Tonetto, Alexandre Doni and Vincenzo Montella were injured with Mirko Vučinić and Philippe Mexès suspended.

But Baptista produced an impressive performance and the former Real Madrid striker opened the scoring with a free-kick after 21 minutes. A foul by Daniele Dessena on Baptista gave Roma their first real chance and the Beast punished them, curling an effort over the wall and into the top corner.

Baptista had further chances to extend Roma's lead before half-time, heading wide on the half-hour mark and then being denied from close range by Luca Castellazi.

Sampdoria had a chance to go level on the stroke of half-time but Paolo Sammarco failed to make the most of Antonio Cassano's beautiful assist and fired over from seven yards.

After the break Roma had an aggressive start and with the Giallorossi dominating possession, Baptista notched his second of the night shortly before the hour mark. The Brazilian skipped past Stefano Lucchini and Marius Stankevičius before smashing a diagonal strike into the far bottom corner.

Marco Padalino should have reduced the deficit with nine minutes left but the midfielder surged inside the area only to miss from close range.
