Manchester United re-established their advantage over Chelsea and Liverpool with a game in hand as they beat relegation-haunted Newcastle United 2-1 at St James' Park.

There was jubilation on Tyneside when, with just nine minutes gone, Peter Løvenkrands ended Edwin van der Sar's run without conceding a Premier League goal after the Dutchman failed to hold Jonás Gutiérrez's shot as it leapt up off the sodden turf.

It might have been 2-0 within four minutes when Obafemi Martins fired inches wide under pressure from Rio Ferdinand.

However, Wayne Rooney, back in the side after recovering from a virus, drew United level on 20 minutes as he turned smartly away from Fabricio Coloccini to score after being set up by John O'Shea.

Newcastle then proceeded to shoot themselves in the foot on 56 minutes as some calamitous defending from Ryan Taylor presented the visitors with a gift-wrapped second.

The Magpies midfielder attempted to chest the ball back to his keeper but it was picked up by Park Ji-Sung who set up Dimitar Berbatov to tap home from six-yards.

Rooney could have added a late third but lifted a good opportunity onto the roof of the net.
