One eyewitness has described the moment José Mourinho allegedly punched another supporter as a "moment of madness."

The Inter Milan boss was accused of thumping a Manchester United fan in the face when he was goaded in a car park by jubilant home supporters celebrating their Champions League victory on Wednesday night.

Steven Mace, 24, was among a group of United supporters who waited outside Old Trafford in order to secure autographs of their favoured stars.

Steven of Doncaster told The Sun: "Mourinho was giving a TV interview and us lot were giving him a bit of argy-bargy — singing, ‘Go home Mourinho’.

"He finished his interview and just came barging over towards us with this look on his face.

"We thought he was going to give autographs, but he walked straight towards this one fella.

"He chanted in a sarcastic voice, ‘Go home Mourinho’? And the next thing he hit this guy.

"It wasn’t a clenched hand — more like a backhand across the face. This other guy was so shocked he didn’t react. Then Mourinho calmly walked off.

"It was a moment of madness from him. I couldn’t believe it."

Fellow United fan Dean Vickers, 28, added: "I was standing next to the guy who got hit.

"We were singing ‘Go home Mourinho’, and he didn’t look impressed.

"He walked up and sneered, ‘Go home Mourinho’? then ‘Bang’, this fella got a backhander.

"The guy went pale and was holding his face. He was in shock.

"He was in his 40s and in no way a hooligan."

Dean, who filmed Mourinho’s interview on his mobile, said the fan who was hit was not chanting. "He got the wrong guy," he said.

Police sources said the film would be crucial as to whether they pursue the complaint against the Portuguese tactician.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Police are investigating a report of common assault. Inquiries are continuing."
