Manchester United moved closer to a third straight Premier League title after a comfortable 2-0 win over Portsmouth at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are now three points clear of Liverpool at the top with a game in hand.

United were in front via their first dangerous attack on nine minutes as Anderson's brilliant pass played Ryan Giggs in behind the defence and he went past Glen Johnson before squaring the ball across the six-yard box, where Wayne Rooney gleefully tapped home.

There were question marks about Giggs being offside but he was played on by left-back Hermann Hreidarsson over the other side of the pitch.

The hosts almost scored again when Anderson fired a 20-yard shot inches wide with David James stranded.

Then a Giggs corner on the half-hour picked out substitute John O’Shea whose header was cleared off the line by Nadir Belhadj.

Substitute Michael Carrick made certain of victory as he latched onto Paul Scholes’ brilliant pass and fired into the far corner in the 82nd minute.

It was Scholes’ 600th appearance for United, where he has spent his entire career.

Chelsea, who had an outside chance in the title race, were held to a goalless stalemate by Everton at Stamford Bridge to slip six points adrift of Manchester United having played a game more than the Premier League leaders.

In a dress rehearsal of next month's FA Cup final, Guus Hiddink's side dominated play but could not break down the resolute Toffees.

Goalkeeper Petr Čech came to Chelsea's rescue in the eighth minute when he raced from his line to deny Jô with his left leg.

Everton left-back Leighton Baines then went down in the box and replays showed Alex caught him with his leg but the referee waved play on.

The Toffees then almost opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when Tim Cahill drilled a low shot towards the bottom corner of the net but ÄŒech pulled off a superb save to deny Everton the lead.

Chelsea’s best chance of goal came from Didier Drogba in the closing moments but his powerful effort from close range hit the bar and bounced away.
