Cacau joins Germany squad for Asia tour

Thursday, May 21, 2009

Brazilian-born striker Cacau was called by Germany coach Joachim Löw for their end-of-season tour of Asia.

The VfB Stuttgart striker, who has lived in Germany for 10 years, was granted German citizenship in January 2009.

He has played in the Bundesliga since 2001 when he joined Nürnberg before moving to Stuttgart six years ago.

"He is a technical striker and has precisely the qualities to match our footballing philosophy," Löw said Tuesday.

"He is very agile and runs a lot, is comfortable on the ball and dangerous in front of goal.

"Therefore, he has deserved his chance with us in view of our future plans."

Löw will be using the trip to experiment with one year to go before the next World Cup, giving newcomers such as Christian Traesch of Stuttgart, Tobias Weis of Hoffenheim and Christian Gentner of VfL Wolfsburg a chance to play their way into his firm plans for South Africa.

Germany fly to China on May 26 and face the national team in Shanghai on May 29 before facing the United Arab Emirates in Dubai on June 2.
