World Cup qualifier: Argentina defeat Colombia

Table of Contents
Argentina beat Colombia 1-0 at the Monumental Stadium to decrease the pressure on Diego Maradona.

The Albiceleste boss was under pressure following a 6-1 mauling to Bolivia in their previous World Cup qualifier in April.

Maradona's troops almost went ahead seven minutes after the interval when a long-range Lionel Messi free-kick struck the crossbar.

But they eventually broke the deadlock three minutes later as Daniel Díaz volleyed home a Juan Verón corner.

Colombia pressed in an aim to draw level but the hosts held on to their lead.

Lineups:

Argentina: Andújar; Daniel Díaz, Demichelis, Heinze; Gago (Zanetti 45), Mascherano; Gutiérrez, Verón; Messi, Tévez, (Burdisso 84), Agüero (Milito 40)

Colombia: Ospina; Perea, Zapata, Yepes, Armero (Quinteros 81); Zúñiga, Vargas, Guarín, Marín (Ramos 65); Renteria, Falcao (Rodallega 72)
