Manchester City tell Lionel Messi to name his price

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Manchester City have not given up on signing Lionel Messi and are in talks with the Barcelona player’s agent, asking him how much his client would want to move to Eastlands.

Messi is currently in talks with the Catalans over a new contract and City have used that situation to renew their interest in the 22-year-old.

According to Marca, nouveau riche City have approached Messi's agent to let the player know of their interest, having handed the Argentine star a blank cheque, in effect asking him to name his price.

City's previous attempt saw an offer that would buy-out Messi's €150 million release clause and offer him €12 million per season after tax, one which was flatly rejected by the Blaugrana idol.

And it is understood their new attempt will receive a similarly short shrift as Messi has stated on numerous occasions that he does not want to ever play for another team.

Barcelona famously paid for medical treatment that helped him develop as a youngster and he feels indebted to the club that have given him the stage to become one of the world's best players.
