Premier League: West Ham 2-0 Portsmouth

Sunday, December 27, 2009

West Ham claimed a vital 2-0 victory over Portsmouth at Upton Park to climb out of the drop zone and rooted their opponents to the bottom of the Premier League.

The home side, who started the day second from bottom, got the crucial first goal after 23 minutes when substitute Luis Jiménez was fouled by former Hammers midfielder Hayden Mullins in the area and Alessandro Diamanti despatched the spot-kick.

Gianfranco Zola's men sealed the victory when Radoslav Kováč rose above Mullins to head home Jiménez's free-kick with a minute to go.
