Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger admits he was disappointed to miss out on highly-rated Fulham defender Chris Smalling.

The Gunners missed out to Manchester United for the signature of Smalling with the England Under 21 international poised to move to Old Trafford in the summer.

According to Wenger, Arsenal came "very close" to capturing the stopper, but says the most important thing is that the 20-year-old enjoys a successful career.

He told www.arsenal.com: "I am sorry because we were very close to getting him. We were on the case very early.

"I wish the player well. At the end of the day it is important he has a good career.

"In both clubs he has a good chance to make a great career. The most important thing is he does that."
