Argentina opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in what was a scrappy affair at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

Gabriel Heinze scored with a diving header in the sixth minute after taking advantage of slack marking to power in a header from Juan Sebastián Verón's corner.

The Albiceleste could have had a hatful but Nigeria keeper Vincent Enyeama made a name for himself with a string of fine saves.
