France are facing almost certain elimination from the World Cup after Mexico inflicted a 2-0 defeat on the former world champions in Polokwane.

Mexico went ahead in the 64th minute when substitute Javier Hernández latched onto Rafael Márquez's perfectly-weighted pass and rounded goalkeeper Hugo Lloris before guiding the ball home.

And France's fate was confirmed with 12 minutes remaining as veteran forward Cuauhtémoc Blanco dispatched from the penalty spot after Éric Abidal fouled Pablo Barrera.

France: Hugo Lloris; Bacary Sagna, William Gallas, Éric Abidal, Patrice Evra; Abou Diaby, Jérémy Toulalan, Sidney Govou (Mathieu Valbuena, 69), Franck Ribéry, Florent Malouda; Nicolas Anelka (André-Pierre Gignac, 46)
