Sunderland ended a run of five previous draws and condemned Aston Villa to a fourth away defeat this season after a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light.
The decisive goal of the game came in the 25th minute when Villa centre-back Richard Dunne poked the ball in at the wrong end for the eighth own goal of his top-flight career.
