The 36-year-old fan - formerly known as Shaun McCormark - changed his name in December as a tribute to the Spaniard who was then Anfield's premier striker.

Fernando Torres McCormark, who runs a toy firm, paid £13.39 to take on the name of his former Kop idol.

But while it maye have seemed like a good idea at the time, that decision has come back to haunt the Scunthorpe lad as his idol made the transfer day switch to Chelsea.

He told This is Scunthorpe: "I am gutted. Being a massive Liverpool fan made my new name the perfect fit.

"I am considering what to do. I've not yet decided whether to change my name."

The name change was said by the operators at the Legal Deed Poll to be the first of its kind in the UK.

Spokeswoman Tina Clough said: "We can appreciate how disappointed the Scunthorpe Fernando feels about his idol's move to Chelsea, but he could always rename himself Andy Carroll.

"We all had a giggle when Shaun's application came through. We often have applications from avid football fans, but this was the first we had for Torres."
