The Real Madrid player left the field of play after 66 minutes in visible pain after clashing with Andrea Pirlo, receiving a knock to his knee.

He was replaced by Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sven Bender and was transported straight to a medical clinic in Milan to undergo radiological tests.

Khedira underwent surgery in Augsburg on Saturday, under the supervision of the German national team's medical chief and renown sports medicine expert, Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfarth.

"The procedure went well. Now we just have to hope that Sami will be fit again time for the World Cup," said Müller-Wohlfahrt.

And there has been a groundswell of support for Khedira on social media.
