Onana arrived at United last summer from Inter Milan with high expectations, having starred in the Champions League.
But despite flashes of quality, his debut campaign was marred by high-profile errors and inconsistent form.
The 28-year-old returned to Carrington in July anticipating a fresh start as United's No 1.
However, an injury ruled him out of much of pre-season, allowing Altay Bayındır to impress in his absence.
When Onana did feature - most notably in the shock League Cup defeat to Grimsby Town - his costly mistakes only intensified the scrutiny.
United's deadline-day move for Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens was the final indication of a changing direction, with Onana sent to Turkey in search of a reset.
Amorim: "The Pressure Was Too Much"
Speaking about the decision, Amorim admitted that while Onana's talent is unquestionable, the relentless pressure at Old Trafford made life increasingly difficult. We saw André had a very, very good season at Inter. The quality is there. He added that a fresh environment could be the key to Onana rediscovering his best form:
But we are in the club and sometimes, in the moment, things can get harder and harder.
You can be really experienced but in this club, the pressure is sometimes so hard on every detail.
Sometimes you can have all the quality in the world, but sometimes you need to change the environment to return to your level.
That was a feeling, not just from us, but also from André.

Fresh Start in Turkey
Onana will now spend the season with Trabzonspor, where he is expected to be first-choice.Amorim and United hope regular football away from the spotlight can help him rebuild his confidence before returning to Manchester.
I wish the best for André. He was really good at working, trying to help the players.
