Vandal films himself setting fire to Cristiano Ronaldo statue in Madeira
A bronze statue of Cristiano Ronaldo has been set on fire in his hometown of Funchal, Madeira, after a vandal filmed himself carrying out the attack outside the CR7 Museum and posted the footage online.

The shocking video, shared by Instagram user @zaino.tcc.filipe, shows a young man dousing the statue in a flammable liquid before setting it alight.

Moments later, he can be seen dancing in front of the flames to music before walking away.

Portuguese police have now confirmed the suspect has been identified and intercepted, with authorities saying the case has been "successfully resolved" following public assistance.

Viral Instagram video shows suspect igniting flames outside CR7 Museum

The clip, which spread rapidly overnight across social platforms, captures the 11ft bronze sculpture outside the CR7 Museum becoming briefly engulfed in fire.

The suspect then performs a strange dance and gestures towards the statue before leaving the scene.

It remains unclear whether the statue sustained lasting damage, though the flames appear to have died down quickly in the footage.

Madeira police thank public as arrest confirmed

In a statement, the Madeira Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) confirmed progress in the investigation and thanked members of the public who reported the incident.

Authorities said public cooperation was "essential" in enabling rapid identification of the suspect and swift action.

Not the first time the Ronaldo statue has been targeted

The statue, located near the popular museum dedicated to Ronaldo's trophies and career, has faced unwanted attention before.

In 2016, the statue was vandalised after it was defaced with "Messi 10" in red paint - a nod to the long-running debate between fans of Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

The incident prompted backlash from Ronaldo's family, and the statue was later moved to its current position outside the museum.

The latest incident also reignited memories of the widely mocked Ronaldo bust that was once displayed at Madeira airport, which was later replaced.

Museum refuses comment as investigation continues

A spokesperson for the CR7 Museum reportedly declined to comment, confirming only that the matter is being handled by police.

The bizarre stunt has been condemned online by fans, with many calling it reckless, disrespectful and attention-seeking - particularly given the suspect chose to film the act and distribute it publicly.
