Wilson's maternal grandfather, Peter Edwards, placed a £50 bet at odds of 2,500/1 back in 2000, wagering that his toddler grandson would one day play for Wales.

More than a decade later, that extraordinary gamble paid off.

A bet that defied all odds

Edwards reportedly walked into a William Hill betting shop in Wrexham and asked to place the unusual bet after noticing Wilson's natural ability - even as a toddler.

The request was so unusual that it had to be approved by the bookmaker's headquarters before the odds were agreed.

Wilson recalled the story whilst speaking on That Peter Crouch Podcast, explaining how his grandfather had been convinced early on.
Growing up in my childhood, I spent a lot of [time] with my nanna because my mum and dad worked full-time.

When my granddad came home on weekends, he just said each weekend he could see me getting stronger kicking the ball or the balloon around the living room, wherever it was.

He went into the William Hill shop in Wrexham and asked if he could put a bet on his grandson to play for Wales. The woman behind the counter said, "Sorry, that's kind of over my head - you're going to have to ring the headquarters in London."

I think it took a couple of months to go through but they gave him 2,500/1. I was 18 months old.

Dream becomes reality in Brussels

The bet was settled on 15 October 2013, when Wilson made his senior debut for Wales as a late substitute in a 1-1 draw against Belgium in Brussels.

That appearance triggered a £125,000 payout for Edwards - a life-changing sum that reportedly allowed him to retire early.
Honestly it was crazy. He put £50 on it. My uncle put £20 on it and my dad didn't put on any so I'm always having a little dig at my dad.

I thought I had to start a game. The night in Brussels, my mum and dad were out there. After the game I've come out and seen them and my mum was like, "Granddad's retiring in the morning!"

I'm pretty sure he was in Exeter that night in his caravan working and saw me get on the pitch in Brussels.

From toddler talent to international star

Wilson's career has since gone from strength to strength. After coming through Liverpool's academy, he joined Fulham permanently in 2022 in a deal worth around £12 million.

The winger has gone on to make over 100 appearances in the Premier League and has become a key player for Wales, earning 67 caps and scoring 17 goals.

He was also eligible to represent England earlier in his career, but ultimately chose Wales - a decision that ensured his grandfather's bet paid off regardless, thanks to a prior agreement with the bookmaker.
