The history of IFFHS

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Perhaps many people don't know about the organization called International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).

From its name it easy to know that they are focusing on the history and statistics of football.

It was founded in 1984 and is based in Bonn, Germany, and produced a monthly Club World Ranking since 1991.

The president, Dr. Alfredo Pöge, has been the main figure behind IFFHS all this time. He is a very intelligent and perfectionist man with many brilliant ideas in his head.

He was the person who had the idea of voting annually for the world's top goalkeeper, world's top referee, and made an official poll for the world's top footballer each year.

Dr. Pöge also behind the idea of inventing a monthly Club World Ranking, World's Top Division Goal Scorer and also top coaches in the world.

He also inventing the idea of holding those and other awards at an annual World Football Gala. Sponsored by adidas, the World's best Footballer for 1989 and 1990 was broadcasted live on German TV station RTL at large galas in Cologne and Bonn.

Naturally, there are some who are not happy with this. Karl Lennartz, a sports historian from Cologne calls the organization "obscure", describing it as a one man show of its chairman Dr. Pöge.

Until now, IFFHS has led new standards over Europe by motivating national sports publishers to make a better document reports and give higher priority to statistics.

Thanks to IFFHS publications, which are based on authenticated data, it brings out all errors and wrong information which for many years have been repeated in sports magazines by reporters in many countries.
