[Tuesday, January 20, 2009 ]

Italy and Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon beats former Manchester United and Denmark custodian Peter Schmeichel as the best goalkeeper of the past two decades, according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).

Buffon, who was awarded the IFFHS' best goalkeeper award in 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007, was top of the rankings by nine points, over second-placed Schmeichel.

Spain and Real Madrid number one, Iker Casillas, was awarded third place followed by German legend Oliver Kahn in fourth and Paraguayan José Luis Chilavert in fifth.

The rankings take into account players from 1990 onwards, and in the top eight there are four players still playing today.
