John Obi Mikel busted for drink driving

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has been charged with suspected drink-driving — just hours before his club's FA Cup tie on Saturday.

The 21-year-old was pulled over by cops after being seen driving his Range Rover 'erratically' near the club's Stamford Bridge stadium in West London at 5.30am. He was given a breath test and put in a police cell.

Mikel had been charged and bailed by the time Chelsea beat Ipswich 3-1. The Nigerian was serving a one match suspension for accruing five yellow cards, so was not available to play in the match.

He will now appear at West London Magistrates Court on April 3, where it is believed he could receive either a year's driving ban or even a jail sentence with a £5,000 fine if convicted.

The Daily Telegraph quotes a Scotland Yard spokesman as saying: "John Obi Mikel, 21, from Weybridge, will appear on bail at West London Magistrates Court on April 3 charged with driving a motor vehicle whilst over the limit."

A Chelsea spokesman said: "We are aware he was arrested and charged. We want to establish the facts before we comment."
