Robben eyes Liverpool revenge

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

Arjen Robben is looking for revenge against Liverpool in the Champions League.

The Dutchman still harbours bitter memories of the double defeat he suffered at the hands of the Reds in the 2004/05 and 2006/07 Champions League semi-finals when he was still at Chelsea.

But he will be offered a chance to seek avenge those losses when his current side, Real Madrid, take on Rafa Benítez's side in the last 16 at the Bernabéu on Wednesday.

"I have a lot of desire to beat Liverpool," he said in an interview with Spanish sports daily AS.

"They are a very strong side but when I was Chelsea, I did not like playing against them.

"I prefer to play Manchester United or Arsenal, because Liverpool are not a team who know how to play good football.

"They are very physical, they work and run a lot and they are tactically very well prepared."

Robben also had words of praise for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who is rated doubtful for the clash with the Spanish giants.

He added: "Gerrard is one of the best midfielders in the world, perhaps the best in the Premier League.

"He has been at Anfield all his career and in that sense, he is similar to Raúl. Neither have ever played for any other club.

"But Liverpool are not a one-man team. They have other quality players like Xabi Alonso, who I like a lot, and Fernando Torres, who can score at any given moment.

"The truth is that it doesn’t matter whether or not Gerrard plays because we only rely on ourselves to progress to the next round."
