Everton ended Manchester United's hopes of finishing the season with an unprecedented quintuple after a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

Both teams had drawn 0-0 through extra time before Tim Howard saved two penalties against his former club to seal a date with Chelsea back at Wembley in late May.

Chances were scarce throughout the match with Ben Foster almost gifting former United striker Louis Saha a goal. The England goalkeeper tried to dribble following a back pass and was pressured by Saha, who lunged to block a hurried clearance but the ball hit him and dropped back into the arms of Foster.

It took 54 minutes before we got the first shot on target as Foster dived to push away a dipping effort from Tim Cahill.

The Red Devils appealed for a penalty on in the 68th minute when Danny Welbeck cut in from the left and nudged the ball past Howard before falling under a challenge from Phil Jagielka, but referee Mike Riley waved play on.

Extra-time arrived and it was again Cahill who nearly broke the deadlock, with Foster making a fine feet-first save.

So to penalties and United fans would have been quietly confident having won the Champions League, Carling Cup and the last two Community Shields on spot-kicks.

They were even more sure of themselves after seeing Cahill blaze over the first spot-kick.

But Dimitar Berbatov's tame attempt was saved by Howard, who also denied Rio Ferdinand before Jagielka became the hero as he hammered home the decisive spot-kick in the shootout.
