Sergio Asenjo to choose Atlético Madrid over Barcelona

Friday, June 19, 2009

One of Spain’s best young goalkeepers, Sergio Asenjo, has made up his mind and wants to join Atlético Madrid despite the late interest from Barcelona.

The main issue that needs to be sorted now is reportedly the price for the Real Valladolid custodian.

The 19-year-old is seen as one of Spain's hottest goalkeeping talent and has impressed all season with Valladolid.

Asenjo was tempted by a move to the Camp Nou, but he did not want to spend next season on the bench waiting for his chance to play.

Instead, Atlético are prepared to offer him the No 1 jersey as Leo Franco and Grégory Coupet are both set to leave.

"I have already informed (Barcelona sporting director) Txiki Begiristain that Sergio Asenjo has decided to stand firm on his idea of signing for Atlético Madrid - if the clubs agree," his agent, Zoran Vekic told the Spanish press.

"The player made his decision before coming to Sweden for the U-21 European Championships."
