Napoli chief slams wantaway striker

Friday, July 24, 2009

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has launched a scathing attack on wantaway striker Ezequiel Lavezzi, insisting he is unworthy of a pay rise.

The Argentina forward left for his holidays before the end of the season, kicking up a stink about not being paid what he deserves amid interest from Liverpool and Juventus.

El Pocho claimed Napoli sporting director Pierpaolo Marino had promised him a lucrative contract extension, which never materialised.

"Our transfer campaign has been done with coherence. We are equipped even to do without Lavezzi," De Laurentiis is quoted as saying by Football Italia.

"Lavezzi would like to review his financial position but the thing is, it's not possible because he didn't get us into the Champions League or the Europa League, so what does he want?

"Sport has to have an educational and exemplary image so what image would it give people if these values came to be betrayed? Lavezzi scored 7 goals last season, we hoped he would score 27.

"He is an inconsistent player. He is not the new (Diego) Maradona and his contribution doesn't help the team.

"For the moment, we have not made any mistakes. If an actor were to behave like this I would eat him alive.

"I want the best from my players. From today onwards I will not tolerate any slyness."
