Premier League: Arsenal 4-1 Portsmouth

Sunday, August 23, 2009

Arsenal continued their impressive start to the new season with a convincing 4-1 win over struggling Portsmouth at Emirates Stadium.

The hosts made a bright start and eventually went ahead on 18 minutes when Abou Diaby turned in Eduardo's cutback from the left.

Before Pompey could recover, they were 2-0 down. This time Emmanuel Eboué broke free down the right before rolling the ball across the six-yard box for Diaby to slot home his second goal.

Pompey, though, were handed a lifeline when Younes Kaboul capitalised on hesitancy from goalkeeper Manuel Almunia to head home from close range.

But William Gallas' comical close-range finish via his shin and face and Aaron Ramsey's clinical fourth made the game safe.
