Premier League: Man City 5-1 Birmingham

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Manchester City opened up a four-point gap on fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with a rousing 5-1 win over Birmingham City at Eastlands on Sunday.

Carlos Tévez opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 38th minute after Scott Dann was adjudged to have bundled over Emmanuel Adebayor.

City went 2-0 ahead in the 40th minute when Nedum Onuoha's header took the slightest deflection off Tévez to go past Maik Taylor in the Blues goal.

Cameron Jerome headed home a precise delivery from James McFadden to reduce Birmingham's arrears almost immediately, but in a frenetic finish to the first half there was still time for Adebayor to roll the ball in from Craig Bellamy' low cross.

The hosts went further ahead in the 74th minute with Onouha shrugging off a couple of half-hearted challenges before sending a shot beyond the despairing Taylor.

Adebayor then completed the scoring with a breakaway goal to condemn Birmingham to their heaviest defeat of the season.
