Didier Deschamps turned down Liverpool job

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

Didier Deschamps has revealed that he turned down the chance to manage Liverpool in the summer in order to stick with Olympique Marseille.

Liverpool eventually appointed Fulham's Roy Hodgson during the close season but Deschamps, who led Marseille to the French title last season, confirmed they also approached him.

However, the former France midfielder felt that the timing of a possible move was wrong, especially with so many things falling into place at the Stade Vélodrome.

"I had a very good conversation with Liverpool this summer, but it was not the right time for me," Deschamps told a press conference.

"It was only a few days before I started preparations for the season with Marseille and on a human level it was the wrong time for me to leave.

"Several players came to Marseille this year on my request and I felt I couldn't break my commitment to them and the rest of the team.

"I didn't want to let them down. After all that happened during the World Cup and the image France gave to the world in South Africa, I didn't want to let my club and my country down."
