Alberto Gilardino put the Viola ahead in the 11th minute as he stretched out a foot to tap in a Juan Vargas from six yards.
Genoa equalised seven minutes later when Giandomenico Mesto played a great give-and-go with Miguel Veloso before firing home at the near post.
