Wednesday, November 3, 2010

Benfica revived their hopes of reaching the last 16 of the Champions League with a thrilling 4-3 home success over Group B leaders Olympique Lyon.

Lyon had seen two goals ruled out during the opening 10 minutes before Alan Kardec headed the hosts into a 20th-minute lead.

Benfica extended the lead on 31 minutes when Fábio Coentrão volleyed home after a swift break and Javi García headed the third from close range two minutes before half-time.

Highly-rated Portugal left-back Coentrão scored a delightful fourth midway through the second half before Lyon pulled a goal back through Yoann Gourcuff 15 minutes from time.

Bafétimbi Gomis then pulled another goal back with five minutes left before Dejan Lovren headed home in the fifth minute of injury time.
