Arsène Wenger: Manuel Almunia could leave

Saturday, January 1, 2011

Arsène Wenger has confirmed that goalkeeper Manuel Almunia could be on his way out of Arsenal in the January transfer window.

The 33-year-old Spaniard, who has captained the side and began the season as first-choice goalkeeper, has not played since the defeat against West Bromwich Albion on September 25, when he sprained his elbow as he saved Chris Brunt's first-half penalty.

Since then, number two Łukasz Fabiański has become a regular in the side, while hot prospect Wojciech Szczęsny was handed a Premier League debut in Arsenal's 1-0 defeat last week at Manchester United.

Málaga and Atlético Madrid are both reported to be interested in moving for Almunia next month, with Wenger to speak with the veteran before a decision is made on his future.

"It will be up to him," Wenger told reporters. "There has been interest from Spain, yes.

"It's difficult to give a percentage over whether he'll stay or not. It's never easy (to go from captain and first choice to third choice), but that's part of our job."
