Premier League: Man United 1-1 Newcastle

Sunday, November 27, 2011

Newcastle United held on with ten men for a 1-1 draw against Manchester United after coming from behind at Old Trafford with the help of a debatable penalty.

The home side took the lead early in the second half when Steven Taylor's attempted clearance ricocheted off Javier Hernández and trickled back over the line.

A controversial penalty then led to Newcastle's equaliser just after the hour mark as Rio Ferdinand was adjudged to have felled Hatem Ben Arfa inside the box despite getting a toe to the ball before tripping the Frenchman.

Striker Demba Ba kept his composure to calmly slot the resulting penalty into the bottom corner, with home protests falling on deaf ears.

Newcastle were able to frustrate their opponents until the final whistle, putting in a heroic defensive effort even after seeing Jonás Gutiérrez sent off for a second bookable offense.
