The hosts broke the deadlock on 17 minutes when Franck Ribéry slotted in a shot from inside the penalty area the Madrid defense failed to properly deal with a Toni Kroos corner.

But José Mourinho's side equalised in the 53rd minute as Mesut Özil tapped home a Cristiano Ronaldo ball after the Portuguese star's initial close-range shot had been parried away by Manuel Neuer.

The first leg had looked destined to end level until the 89th minute when Mario Gómez knocked the ball in after some superb play on the wing by Philipp Lahm.
