Defending champions Barcelona were forced to work hard before a late Lionel Messi double earned them a 2-1 victory at Levante.

José Barkero gave the home team a surprise lead with a 23rd-minute penalty before Messi drew Barça level with half an hour to go.

Messi then steered home a penalty on 72 minutes after Pedro Botelho was adjudged to have bundled over Isaac Cuenca inside the area.
