Premier League: Arsenal 6-1 Southampton

Sunday, September 16, 2012

Arsenal maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a thumping 6-1 win over Premier League new boys Southampton at the Emirates.

The home side opened the scoring after just 11 minutes when Kieran Gibbs' cross was bundled into his own net by the hapless Jos Hooiveld.

A curling 25-yard free-kick from Lukas Podolski, his first goal at the Emirates, doubled Arsenal's advantage and a long-awaited Gervinho strike put the hosts three to the good.

Things got even worse for Southampton on 37 minutes when another Gibbs' cross cannoned off Nathaniel Clyne and into his own net, but the visitors gave themselves a glimmer of hope right on the stroke of half-time as Danny Fox lashed home after an error from the returning Wojciech Szczęsny.

Arsenal continued to assert their domination in the second half as a second goal from Gervinho and first of the season from former Saints player Theo Walcott capped a fine day for the Gunners.
