Odion Ighalo gave the hosts a 26th-minute lead but Messi came to Barça's rescue by pouncing on a loose ball to level the score five minutes into the second-half.

The Argentine wizard then turned game-winner 17 minutes from the end, curling a superb free-kick over the wall and past a diving Toño to raise his La Liga goal tally to 37 on the season.

Messi has now scored 206 in La Liga, 56 in the Champions League, 24 in the Copa del Rey, 10 in the Spanish Super Cup, 4 in the Club World Cup and 1 European Super Cup.

"He's broken another personal record," Barça assistant coach Jordi Roura told a news conference. "I also think that his 301 goals in official matches is incredible."

Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba added on the club's website: "301 goals for Messi. Whatever anyone says will come up short."
