United broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when Wayne Rooney volleyed home Patrice Evra's left-wing cross after excellent work from Robin van Persie in the build-up.

But Rolfes equalised against the run of play nine minutes after the interval.

Son Heung-min did superbly well to hold off his marker before laying back to Rolfes.

The Leverkusen skipper was unmarked on the edge of the box and he did not hesitate as he curled the ball into the corner of the net with his left foot.

However, van Persie quickly restored United's lead and Rooney made it 3-1 before Antonio Valencia scored a counter-attacking goal.

Ömer Toprak pulled one back for Leverkusen with three minutes left, but it was scant consolation.
