Fair-play gesture backfires spectacularly in Poland

Sunday, June 8, 2014

An attempt to demonstrate a bit of fair play by Polonia Warsaw backfired spectacularly in their match against Błękitni Gąbin last week.

Polonia, who have been relegated down to the sixth tier of Polish football due to financial problems, were leading 1-0 in the 90th minute when the ball was kicked out of play for an injury.

In true sporting style, Polonia midfielder Dominik Lemanek decided to return the ball to the opposition goalkeeper from the halfway line.

Lemanek, however, didn't notice the goalkeeper was out of position and couldn't get back across in time as the ball bounced over and in.

With time running out, there wasn't even time for Polonia to give Błękitni a free run at goal, as the whistle went and the game finished 2-0.
