Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that he did try to sign Mario Balotelli during his time in charge of Paris Saint-Germain.

Ancelotti was desperate to lure a high-profile attacker to Paris ahead of his second season in charge of the French club and he had earmarked then-Manchester City forward Balotelli as a potential signing.

"Would I sign (Balotelli)? I was trying to at Paris Saint-Germain," Ancelotti told La Repubblica.

"He was coming off the back of an impressive European Championship.

"Then the opportunity for (Zlatan) Ibrahimović presented itself and we went more on the safe side."

Balotelli is yet to score for Liverpool in the Premier League since his arrival from AC Milan last August, but Ancelotti is confident that once the striker feels settled at Anfield, he will eventually come good.

He added: "He has to find a place to feel at ease.

"Sooner or later he will succeed, but it depends on him - heaven helps those who help themselves."
