Copa del Rey: Spanish minnows knock out Real Madrid

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Raúl's hat-trick was not enough to lead Real Madrid into the last 16 of Copa del Rey despite a 4-3 victory over Third Division Real Unión at the Bernabeu.

The Spanish minnows progressed thanks to the away goals rule, having beaten mighty Real 3-2 in the first leg.

Paul Abasolo gave the Basque club the lead after 14 minutes, but Raúl equalised for Real in the 36th minute after catching out Edouard with a header.

Unión regained the advantage shortly after the break through Asier Salcedo before Raúl rallied Real again just two minutes later.

Youth ace Alberto Bueno gave the hosts their first lead on the night in the 68th minute with his first senior goal.

And Raúl's third in the 86th minute looked to have put Real through to next round.

However, Eneko Romo's 90th-minute header was enough to put the minnows into the last 16 on away goals with the aggregate even at 6-6.
