Reigning champions Real Madrid missed the chance to join rivals Barcelona at top of La Liga as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Almería.

Real were without striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, struggling with a knee injury, and Rubén de la Red, who was still in shock after collapsing on the pitch during Copa del Rey match against Real Unión.

Veteran striker Raúl headed the visitors ahead in the 38th minute, but Argentine Pablo Piatti equalised with eight minutes left to deny Real victory.

Bernd Schuster's side now lie third, two points off leaders Barcelona.

10-man Sevilla suffered their second successive league defeat after Real Valladolid battled from two goals down to win 3-2 at Municipal José Zorrilla.

The visitors went to a 2-0 lead after 26 minutes following goals from Renato and Jesús Navas, but striker Luís Fabiano was dismissed in the 35th minute after receiving a second yellow card.

It proved the turning point in the match as Jonathan Sesma scored pulled one back before the break before substitute Fabián Canobbio scored twice after the interval to seal a remarkable comeback.

Sevilla, which lost to minnows Ponferradina 1-0 in the Copa del Rey in midweek, stayed fifth with 17 points.
