World's Top Goal Scorer in 2008

Wednesday, January 7, 2009

Colo Colo striker Lucas Barrios has been named as the world's Best Top Goal Scorer in 2008 by The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).

The Argentinian scored 37 times in 38 appearances for the Chilean side to help his club to become league champions. He was also the world's second Most Effective Top Goal scorer, behind the Lebanese Mohammed Ghaddar.

New Real Madrid striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar finished second with 33 goals and Uruguayan Miguel Ximénez at third with 32.

In the 60 top leagues across all continents there were only 50 players who scored 20 or more goals during the national championships of 2007/08 with 31 of these 60 countries the national top goal scorer scoring less than 20 goals.

The IFFHS has determined annually since 1997 the world's best Top Goal Scorer – based on goal and not points.

From the 60 strongest national leagues of the world in the previous year, the total number of goals during a championship season is calculated. But the championship must be finished in the voting year. In order not to put at a disadvantage those players who play in Latin American countries, that play during each calendar year two championships, the Apertura and Clausura (including possible play-offs) form a normal season.

The awards will be made on the occassion of the 25 Years IFFHS & World Football Gala on 16th March 2009 in France.
