Veteran midfielder Nicky Butt has signed a 12-month contract extension that will keep him at Newcastle until the end of next season.

The future of Butt had been in doubt because his current deal runs out at the end of this campaign, but the Magpies have tied him down for a further season.

Butt, who turned 34 last month, moved to St James' Park from Manchester United in the summer of 2004, but struggled to make his mark during his early days on Tyneside and spent the 2005/06 season out on loan at Birmingham City.

However, he has re-established himself as a key member of the Newcastle side in recent seasons.

"I'm happy to get it sorted - now know I'll be staying at Newcastle United next season," said Butt.

"We hope we can get things moving forward again, start climbing the table and finish this season as strong as we possibly can."

Butt joins Steve Harper and Shola Ameobi in signing new deals at Newcastle.
