Alex Ferguson: Rooney used the wrong word

Saturday, March 14, 2009

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has sprung to Wayne Rooney's defence in the row over the striker's declaration that he hates Liverpool.

Rooney made the inflammatory comment to MUTV in the aftermath of Wednesday's Champions League win over Inter Milan and were eventually removed from United's official website on Thursday afternoon for fear of causing tension between the two clubs ahead of their Premier League clash on Saturday.

As an Everton supporter, a former Everton player and a member of the Red Devils, the 23-year-old has regularly found himself the target for terrace abuse from Liverpool supporters.

However, Ferguson believes the issue has been blown out of proportion and reckons his man probably used the wrong word.

"I don’t think it was anything out of the ordinary," he said during a pre-match press conference.

"Everyone uses the word hatred, because it is easy to say. I hate this, I hate that. What’s the other word? Dislike. But nobody uses dislike.

"Wayne has had plenty of stick playing against Liverpool. It’s understandable. He had his loyalty to Everton as a kid.

"The rivalry is ferocious between Liverpool and Everton. Now he is at United, he wants us to win."
