José Mourinho: My Chelsea regret

José Mourinho has admitted that he should have left Chelsea earlier than he actually did.

The Blues' former boss left in September 2007 after his relationship with owner Roman Abramovich had soured with the appointment of Avram Grant as the club's Director of Football.

"My biggest mistake as a coach? Instead of leaving Chelsea in September, I should have left in July," the Special One said in an interview with UEFA's Champions League official magazine.

"Instead of a season where I only worked for three months in difficult circumstances, I'd have gone to a really big, big team because I had that big, big team wanting me."

It is thought he was referring to Real Madrid. That summer Fabio Capello left the Spanish giants but his replacement Bernd Schuster has since been replaced by former Sevilla and Tottenham Hotspur boss Juande Ramos.

"Did I compromise myself to stay at Chelsea? Yes," Mourinho, now boss at Inter Milan, conceded.
