Birthday boy O'Shea rewarded with ultimate prize

Thursday, April 30, 2009

John O'Shea's winning goal against Arsenal last night was followed by the perfect birthday present from Sir Alex Ferguson — the promise of a Champions League final place if Manchester United progress to the final in Rome next month.

O’Shea, 28 today, got the only goal in the 18th minute of last night’s first leg at Old Trafford to put United in touching distance of another Champions League final.

And Ferguson believes the 27-year-old’s effort is worthy of a reward.

He told journalists: "John is one of the great professionals of our time.

"The boy never complains and is happy to play anywhere He has not always been the No 1 choice. But he produces 30 performances a season which we’re grateful for.

"He plays left-back, right-back, centre-back and midfield. He is so versatile. This season he has not missed many games because of the injuries we have had.

"And if you ask me now if we get to the final will he be in the team, I would say yes."

O'Shea added: "It’s an early birthday present for me and I dedicate it to my dad because he has been having a tough time of late so this should cheer him up."
